THE PROJECT
This project revitalized an aging, underutilized area within Luther Burbank Park on Mercer Island, Washington. The site previously featured tennis courts over deteriorated asphalt, which had suffered extensive cracking and damage over the years, making the space unsuitable for recreation and largely neglected by the public.
The site presented two significant challenges:
Severely damaged surface: The original asphalt base had major cracking and degradation.
Unstable subgrade: The soils beneath the courts were unsuitable, eliminating the option for a simple overlay.
THE SOLUTION
To create a long-lasting, community-focused space, the project team completed a full over-excavation and repaving of the site, establishing a stable foundation and installing a high-performance Plexipave Ultra Performance surface.
